Like the menu at Chipotle, charitable giving comes with a plethora of options. You can go the classic route (that’s meat and cheese if you’re eating or monetary donations if you’re giving), or you can build your own according to your personal tastes. Either way, you’re ordering up some good in the world, and you can’t go wrong with that.

How should I give?

Whether you’re new to giving or you’ve been at it for years, you should approach it with a strategy. To start, it’s a good idea to take stock of your circumstances each year. That means take a look at both your finances and your schedule before embarking on charitable giving. Once you’ve determined what you can give in terms of money and time, your next step is to decide how.

Here are a few ways you can give back this holiday season:

Make a financial donation to charitable organizations: Most charitable orgs run holiday-specific campaigns. Choose organizations that align with your values and the causes you are passionate about.

Volunteer your time: If you have the time to spare, consider helping out at local shelters, food banks, or community events during the holiday season. Your presence and assistance can be invaluable.

Host a charity event: Organize a charity event in your community, workplace, or social circle. It could be a fundraiser, a toy drive, or a food collection drive. Share your event on social media for exposure.

Adopt a family: Many organizations and communities offer programs where you can “adopt” a family in need for the holidays. You can provide gifts, food, and other essentials to make their holiday season special.

Create care packages: Assemble care packages with essential items and holiday treats and distribute them to homeless individuals, veterans, or the elderly. Small gestures can make a big difference.

Support local businesses: Patronize local businesses that give back to the community. Some businesses donate a portion of their profits to charitable causes during the holiday season.

Anonymous giving: Anonymous giving during the holidays can be a particularly heartwarming experience. Leaving a gift or a meal for someone in need without revealing your identity can create a sense of wonder and magic. It’s a reminder that there is goodness in the world and that even strangers care.

Responsible giving

While holiday charitable giving is undoubtedly a beautiful gesture, it’s important to give responsibly. Here are some tips to ensure your contributions make the most impact:

Research charities: Before donating, research the charities or organizations to ensure they are legitimate and that the majority of funds go to the intended recipients.

Check for tax deductibility: If you want to receive a tax deduction for your donation, make sure the organization is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

Look for long-term impact: Instead of one-time giving, consider how your donations can create a lasting impact. Supporting programs that offer education, job training, or empowerment can help those who need a boost to become self-sufficient.

Donate wisely: If you choose to donate goods, make sure they’re practical, helpful, and uncomplicated. This reduces waste and ensures your gifts are able to be used.

Sharing the spirit of the season

Holiday charitable giving is a powerful way to spread joy, kindness, and hope during a season known for its magic and warmth. It’s an opportunity to share the abundance in your life with those less fortunate. Whether it’s through donations, volunteering, or creating your own charitable initiatives, you’ll make a meaningful difference in the world. The impact of holiday giving resonates far beyond the holiday season, reminding us that the true spirit of giving is something that should be celebrated every day of the year. This holiday season, choose your how and let goodness grow!
